Patrick Volkerding

October 20, 1966 marks the birth of Patrick Volkerding in Virginia, a programmer who eventually established his influence in the field of software engineering. As the creator of the Slackware Linux distribution, he maintains a primary role in its development, functioning as the project's long-term leader and technical overseer within the American technology landscape.

Academic Foundation and Early Interests

Volkerding completed his formal education at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science in 1993. His personal life outside of programming was marked by his attendance at 75 Grateful Dead concerts by April 1994. Beyond his technical interests, he maintains a commitment to homebrewing, having historically requested that Slackware users contribute bottles of local beer as a form of appreciation.

Development of Slackware Linux

The creation of Slackware began with a distribution model supported by Michael Johnston of Morse Telecommunications, who paid Volkerding one dollar for each copy sold. This progressed to a partnership with Robert Bruce of Walnut Creek CDROM. Volkerding held a 40 percent minority stake in the resulting entity, Slackware Linux, Inc., while the firm was eventually acquired by BSDi and subsequently Wind River Systems. Disputes regarding compensation led to the departure of several contributors, including Chris Lumens. Since those transitions, Volkerding has operated the project through the assistance of volunteers and testers.

Health Challenges and Recognition

In 2004, Volkerding informed the community through a mailing list post that he had been diagnosed with actinomycosis. The severity of the condition and the uncertainty of his recovery prompted speculation regarding the project's viability. By 2012, both the software distribution and the maintainer were reported to have returned to a functional and healthy state. His technical contributions were acknowledged in 2014 when he received the O'Reilly Open Source Award.

Authorship and Documentation

Volkerding contributed to several technical publications regarding Linux. His works include Linux in Plain English (1997), LINUX Configuration and Installation (1998), Instalación y configuración de Linux (1999), and Linux System Commands (2000), co-authored with associates including Kevin Reichard and Eric Foster-Johnson.
