Patrick Jean Pouyanné assumed the role of chief executive officer at TotalEnergies in October 2014, following the death of Christophe de Margerie. Since then, he has navigated the transformation of the French petroleum conglomerate, formally combining the positions of chairman and chief executive in December 2015 to consolidate leadership of the energy entity.
Early Education and Public Service
Born in 1963 in Le Petit-Quevilly, France, Pouyanné attended the École polytechnique at age 20, where he earned an engineering degree. He also studied at Mines ParisTech. His professional career began in 1989 within the French Ministry of Industry. By 1993, he shifted into political advisory, serving as the technical advisor to Prime Minister Édouard Balladur. He later functioned as the chief of staff to the Minister for Information Technology and Space, François Fillon, between 1995 and 1996.

In January 1997, Pouyanné transitioned to the private sector by joining the petroleum company Elf as general secretary for its Angolan operations. Following the 2000 absorption of Elf by Total, he maintained his trajectory within the organization. By 2002, he was promoted to senior vice president of the exploration-production department, handling finance, economics, and information systems. In 2006, he took responsibility for strategy, business development, and research and development.
Executive Leadership
Pouyanné joined the Total management committee in May 2006. He advanced to deputy general manager of refining and chemistry in 2011 and became president of that department in 2012. After his 2014 appointment as CEO, he was elected to the board of directors in May 2015. Under his tenure, he has participated in high-level economic forums, including the 2018 World Economic Forum and a 2022 state dinner at the White House.
External Appointments and Recognition
Beyond his responsibilities at TotalEnergies, Pouyanné serves on several corporate and non-profit boards, including Capgemini, the Brookings Institution, and the Polytechnic Institute of Paris. He is a member of the European Round Table of Industrialists and The Business Council. The French government recognized his service by naming him a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2015, followed by an appointment as an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2023.
