Olga Taussky-Todd: The Torchbearer for Matrix Theory
She sat in a Vienna coffeehouse alongside Kurt Gödel, listening to the philosophers of the Vienna Circle argue logical positivism into existence, and then went on to spend World War II calculating how airplane wings vibrate using matrix algebra. Olga Taussky-Todd called herself, without irony, "a torchbearer for matrix theory" — a field she helped drag from a footnote of linear algebra into a discipline with its own serious literature, across a nearly seventy-year career that produced roughly three hundred papers.
A Chemist's Daughter in Vienna
Taussky was born August 30, 1906, in Olmütz, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire — today Olomouc, in the Czech Republic — into a Jewish family; her father Julius David was an industrial chemist who later directed a vinegar factory, and both of her sisters went on to careers in chemistry and pharmacy themselves. The family moved to Vienna when she was three and later to Linz. Her father died during her final year of school, and in the fall of 1925 she enrolled at the University of Vienna to study mathematics, earning her doctorate in 1930 under Philipp Furtwängler with a thesis on algebraic number fields and class field theory, work substantial enough to be published in Crelle's Journal in 1932.
Coffeehouse Philosophy and Hilbert's Errata
While still a doctoral student, Taussky attended meetings of the Vienna Circle, the group of philosophers and logicians building logical positivism, becoming one of the first women admitted into a circle that included Gödel, Rudolf Carnap, and Otto Neurath. Her first serious professional assignment was almost comically exacting: assisting at Göttingen from 1931 to 1932, working with Richard Courant to prepare David Hilbert's collected works on number theory for a birthday presentation volume, a task that meant hunting down and correcting errors across Hilbert's own published mathematics — she reportedly left only a single unresolved point, concerning the continuum hypothesis, that no one could fix.
Matrices at War
The 1930s scattered Taussky across a series of short-term positions — a Vienna tutorship, fellowships at Bryn Mawr and Girton College, Cambridge, then teaching posts in London. In 1938 she married the Irish mathematician Jack (John) Todd, a colleague from her time in London, beginning a marriage that would also become one of the more productive mathematical partnerships of the century. When war came, Taussky went to work for Britain's National Physical Laboratory, applying matrix analysis to a distinctly unglamorous, urgent problem: the flutter and vibration of aircraft wings, work published through the Ministry of Aircraft Production. It was applied, wartime mathematics rather than pure theory, and it pushed her decisively toward the subject — matrices — that would define the rest of her career.
From Washington to Caltech
Taussky and Todd emigrated to the United States in 1945 and both joined the National Bureau of Standards' National Applied Mathematics Laboratory, where she remained a consultant until 1957. That year the couple moved together to the California Institute of Technology, where Taussky-Todd became a professor and stayed until her retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1977, continuing to correspond about matrix theory research for years afterward. At Caltech she supervised a line of doctoral students that included Lorraine Foster, the university's first female mathematics Ph.D., along with Hanna Neumann, Philip J. Hanlon, and Charles Royal Johnson.
Building Matrix Theory Into a Field
Taussky-Todd's central scientific legacy is matrix theory itself — not a single theorem but a body of results on integral matrices, the computational stability of complex matrices, and connections between matrix algebra, group theory, and numerical analysis, developed across roughly three hundred papers written over decades. She moved comfortably between pure algebraic number theory, her original doctoral field, and the more applied, computational matrix work that wartime necessity had pushed her toward, treating the boundary between "pure" and "applied" mathematics as far less fixed than most of her contemporaries did.
Recognition Late and Deserved
Formal recognition for Taussky-Todd accumulated mostly in the second half of her career and after. The Mathematical Association of America gave her the Ford Prize for an article on sums of squares published in the *American Mathematical Monthly*; she was named a Noether Lecturer, a distinction the Association for Women in Mathematics reserves for women who have made fundamental and sustained contributions to the mathematical sciences; and she received honorary doctorates from the University of Vienna, the city where her career began, and from the University of Southern California in 1988. Austria elected her to its Academy of Sciences in 1975 and awarded her the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, in 1978 — a formal homecoming for a mathematician the country's own upheavals had once pushed into exile.
Why Olga Is Called a Genius
Taussky-Todd's case for genius rests on sustained, structural contribution rather than a single celebrated breakthrough: she is credited with turning matrix theory from a scattered set of techniques into a coherent field with its own community, an achievement recognized concretely when the International Linear Algebra Society created the Taussky-Todd Lecture in 1993, later elevated to the ILAS Taussky-Todd Prize. Colleagues and honors bodies used exactly that kind of language about her — the Ford Prize, Vice-Presidency of the American Mathematical Society, an Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art — all pointing to depth and range rather than a single flash of insight. The honest complication is that she rarely gets credited with one landmark theorem the way some contemporaries are; her distinction was breadth, persistence, and connective work across number theory, group theory, and numerical matrix analysis over nearly seventy years, plus the less quantifiable work of mentoring a generation of mathematicians, including breaking a barrier for women at Caltech. Her own account of what mattered to her leaned less on triumph than on stamina: she wrote that her enthusiasm for mathematics "did not diminish through hardships, difficulties, and disappointments," a description of durability more than of sudden brilliance.
Legacy
Taussky-Todd died October 7, 1995, in Pasadena, having spent forty years at the center of American mathematical life after fleeing Europe ahead of the war. The Taussky-Todd Prize the International Linear Algebra Society now awards in her name keeps her original description of herself intact: not the inventor of a single dazzling result, but the person who carried matrix theory, largely by force of sustained work, from a minor topic into a mathematical field others could build careers on.
