Oleksandr Turchynov

Oleksandr Turchynov held the office of President of Ukraine in 2014, assuming the role following the removal of Viktor Yanukovych from power. Beyond his political career, which includes long tenures as a People's Deputy and head of the National Security and Defense Council, he maintains an active background as a screenwriter, economist, and deacon within the Baptist church.

Early Career and Education

Born in Dnipro in 1964, Turchynov completed his education at the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine. His professional life began at the Kryvorizhstal steel producer. By the late 1980s, he transitioned into political administration, serving within the Komsomol apparatus in Dnipropetrovsk. In the early 1990s, he moved to Kyiv to serve as an economic advisor to Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma, later directing the Economic Reforms Institute.

Parliamentary and Ministerial Work

Turchynov maintained a consistent presence in the Verkhovna Rada, serving in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th convocations. A key ally of Yulia Tymoshenko, he helped lead the All-Ukrainian Union 'Fatherland'. In 2005, he became the first civilian head of the Security Service of Ukraine. Throughout his career, he held various executive roles, including acting Prime Minister in 2010 and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council from 2014 to 2019.

Creative and Religious Pursuits

Beyond his governance roles, Turchynov is a member of the National Writers' Union of Ukraine, focusing his creative output on screenwriting. His public identity also incorporates his religious commitments. As a deacon, he is associated with the Baptist faith and the Charismatic Movement, reflecting a personal dedication that contrasts with his highly bureaucratic and security-focused political track record.
