Early Development and Dynamo Kyiv
Mykhaylychenko entered the professional ranks through the youth system at Dynamo Kyiv, operating under the guidance of Anatoliy Byshovets. He debuted in the Soviet Top League in 1981, eventually becoming a pivotal attacking midfielder. During this tenure, he helped the club secure four championships and three Soviet Cup titles. His continental impact peaked when Dynamo Kyiv claimed the 1985–86 European Cup Winners' Cup. By 1988, his technical proficiency earned him the Soviet Footballer of the Year award, complemented by back-to-back Ukrainian Footballer of the Year honors in 1987 and 1988.

In 1990, Mykhaylychenko moved to Italy to join Sampdoria, participating in their successful 1990–91 Serie A title campaign. He subsequently transferred to the Scottish club Rangers. His initial season at Ibrox proved the most productive, featuring 27 league appearances and 10 goals as the team completed a double of the Premier Division title and the Scottish Cup. Although manager Walter Smith later transitioned him to the left wing and limited his playing time due to the arrival of Brian Laudrup, Mykhaylychenko remained in Glasgow until his retirement in May 1996.
International Competition
Mykhaylychenko earned 36 caps for the Soviet Union, scoring nine goals. His international career highlight occurred at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he secured a gold medal. He also contributed to the squad that reached the final of Euro 1988. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, he represented the CIS at Euro 1992 and made his debut for the Ukrainian national team in October 1992 during a match against Belarus.
Transition to Coaching and Administration
Post-retirement, Mykhaylychenko entered coaching, serving as an assistant to Valeriy Lobanovsky at Dynamo Kyiv for five years. After Lobanovsky’s death in 2002, he assumed head coaching responsibilities, leading the club to two league titles and a Ukrainian Cup. He later managed the Ukraine national under-21 team, guiding them to the final of the 2006 European Championship. His subsequent career included a two-year tenure as head coach of the senior Ukraine national team and a return to Dynamo Kyiv in 2019. In 2021, he became vice-president of the Ukrainian Association of Football.
