Born in Kyiv on 2 January 1975, Shovkovskyi spent his entire professional playing career with Dynamo Kyiv. A graduate of the club's youth academy, he debuted in 1993 and remained a cornerstone of the squad until his retirement on 13 December 2016 at the age of 41. He holds the record for the most appearances for the club in its history, securing 14 Ukrainian Premier League titles, 10 Ukrainian Cups, and 6 Ukrainian Super Cups during his tenure.

Shovkovskyi represented Ukraine 92 times between 1994 and 2012. His international path was marked by extreme highs and lows, including a critical error in a 2000 play-off against Slovenia that cost Ukraine a place at Euro 2000. He rebounded to become a national fixture, holding a 728-minute streak without conceding a goal for the national team until 2013. In a singular 2020 event, he was even listed as a back-up goalkeeper for a friendly against France at age 45 due to an emergency shortage of available players.
Transition to Management and Politics
Following his retirement, Shovkovskyi moved into coaching, serving as an assistant to Andriy Shevchenko from 2018 until January 2023. He later took charge of Dynamo Kyiv, leading the side to a 2024–25 Ukrainian Premier League title. Simultaneously, he entered public life, supporting the Euromaidan movement and successfully running for the Kyiv City Council in the 2020 local elections as a representative of the UDAR party.
