Early Development and Domestic Success
Born on 4 February 1964 in Dnipropetrovsk, Protasov began his football training at the age of eight. He developed his skills at the Dnipro-75 sports school under Igor Vetrogonov. By 1983, he was a key member of the Dnipro roster that secured its first domestic title. His offensive capabilities were instrumental to the team until his departure in 1987, at which point he had amassed 125 goals in top-tier competition, ranking as the eighth-best scorer in the league's history.

Protasov represented the Soviet Union in 68 matches, establishing himself as the second-highest goalscorer in the team's history with 29 goals, trailing only Oleg Blokhin. He participated in the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups and contributed two goals during the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament. Additionally, he appeared in one match for the Ukraine national team in 1994.
European Tenure and Management
In 1990, he transitioned to the Greek club Olympiacos Piraeus, where he played until 1994 before stints with Gamba Osaka, Veria FC, and Proodeftiki FC. Following his retirement in 1999, he pursued a coaching career. He guided Olympiacos to a Greek title in 2003 and later managed Steaua București, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, FC Kuban Krasnodar, Iraklis, and FC Astra Giurgiu.
