Early Career and Dutch Development
Born in 1985 in Turku, Moisander joined the local TPS youth system alongside his twin brother, Henrik. After making 17 appearances for the senior side between 2002 and 2003, both brothers moved to the Netherlands to join Ajax. During their initial stint in Amsterdam, they played for the youth and reserve squads, contributing to league title wins. In 2006, Niklas transitioned to FC Zwolle to gain regular playing time, where he recorded 75 appearances and five goals over two seasons.

In 2008, AZ Alkmaar acquired Moisander for €600,000. He quickly integrated into the first team under Louis van Gaal, helping the club secure the Eredivisie title in the 2008-09 season. His role expanded significantly in the following years; by the 2011-12 season, he had been appointed team captain. He featured prominently in the club's continental campaigns, including a run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
International Tenure and Later Club Years
Moisander debuted for the Finland national team in May 2008 at age 22. Over the next nine years, he served as a central figure in the squad, eventually becoming the team captain. His performance at the club level earned him the Finnish Footballer of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013. Following his time at AZ, he returned to Ajax for three seasons and later played for Sampdoria and Werder Bremen. He concluded his playing career after four seasons with Malmö FF, officially retiring at the end of 2024.
