Academic and Professional Origins
Born in 1966 in Järfälla Municipality, Sweden, Zennström completed a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in engineering physics at Uppsala University. His international experience included a one-year exchange program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1999, Zennström left Tele2 to launch Get2Net and Everyday.com. His interest in peer-to-peer applications led to the 2001 co-founding of KaZaA, which became a widely used file-sharing platform before its sale to Sharman Networks. Simultaneously, he operated Joltid, a firm specializing in traffic optimization, and co-founded the peer-to-peer network Altnet. Following the success of Skype, he continued his work in digital services by co-founding the internet video platform Joost in 2006 and the music streaming service Rdio in 2010.
Investment and Philanthropy
Zennström founded the London-based venture capital firm Atomico, which has directed investments into technology enterprises such as Supercell, Klarna, and DeepL. Beyond commercial operations, he and his wife, Catherine Zennström, established Zennström Philanthropies in 2007. The foundation prioritizes human rights and climate change initiatives.
