Formative Years and Burmese Custody
The early life of Naresuan was marked by regional conflict between the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the First Toungoo Empire. Following a siege, he was sent to Bago as a royal hostage to ensure his father's fidelity to King Bayinnaung. During this six-year residency, he underwent military training alongside the sons of Burmese nobles and princes. He returned to his home kingdom in 1570, bringing with him a comprehensive understanding of Burmese military tactics and linguistic proficiency.

In 1570, at age fifteen, he was named viceroy and assumed responsibility for the defense of Phitsanulok. His tenure as ruler from 1571 to 1590 was defined by efforts to consolidate power against external threats, particularly repeated incursions by the Khmer army. He successfully repelled several Cambodian naval and land offensives, utilizing artillery to force the retreat of invading forces and eventually neutralizing the threat to the stability of the capital.
Accession and Reign
Naresuan ascended to the throne as King of Thailand in 1590, succeeding his father. His reign continued until 1605, a period characterized by persistent warfare against the Taungoo Dynasty. During this time, he also engaged in international diplomacy, notably welcoming Dutch interests into the kingdom. He maintained his commitment to Theravāda traditions throughout his life. He died in 1605 at Wiang Haeng and was subsequently interred at Wat Phra Sri Sanphet.
