Early Career and Fusion Roots
After attending Western Michigan University between 1970 and 1972, Walden gained early recognition playing in rock bands in Miami. He soon entered the jazz fusion scene, notably serving as the drummer for the Mahavishnu Orchestra during its second iteration from 1974 to 1976. During this period, he also performed alongside figures such as John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, and Weather Report, cementing his reputation as a high-level instrumentalist.

Mentored by Quincy Jones, Walden pivoted toward songwriting and record production. He established his own studio in 1985, which became a hub for hit-making in the R&B genre. His extensive production credits include working with Whitney Houston on hits like How Will I Know, as well as Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and The Temptations. Walden also contributed to numerous film soundtracks, including The Bodyguard, 9½ Weeks, and Licence to Kill.
Grammy Recognition and Later Work
Walden earned eight Grammy nominations throughout his career, securing three awards. His wins include Best R&B Song for Freeway of Love in 1985, Producer of the Year in 1987, and a share of the Album of the Year award for The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album in 1993. Decades later, he returned to rock performance, joining the band Journey in 2020 as a drummer, participating in the recording of their 2022 album Freedom before his departure that same year.
