Mpule Kwelagobe secured a historic victory in 1999 as the first woman from Botswana to win the Miss Universe title and the inaugural black African recipient of a Big Four international beauty pageant crown. Early Career and Pageantry
Born in Gaborone on 14 November 1979, Kwelagobe began her professional exposure to pageantry while attending Lobatse Senior Secondary School. At age 17, she became the youngest woman to win Miss Botswana in 1997. She represented her country at the Miss World 1997 competition in Mahé, Seychelles. In 1999, she attained the title of Miss Universe Botswana and subsequently triumphed at the Miss Universe 1999 pageant held in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, defeating runners-up from the Philippines and Spain.

Following her reign, Kwelagobe focused on human rights and health advocacy. Appointed as a United Nations goodwill ambassador in 2000, she concentrated on HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual reproductive education. Her advocacy included testifying before the United States House Committee on Financial Services and addressing the World Summit on Sustainable Development. In 2000, she established the MPULE Foundation to promote behavioral changes among youth in Botswana. Her efforts in health human rights were recognized in 2001 when she received the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award.
Academic and Professional Pursuits
Kwelagobe pursued higher education at Columbia University in New York City, earning a degree in international political economy starting in 2002. Building on her leadership roles, she was named a Global Leader for Tomorrow in 2003 and a Young Global Leader in 2006 by the World Economic Forum. In 2011, she launched the MPULE Institute for Endogenous Development to function as a think tank for green initiatives and agricultural sustainability. She also co-founded QuesS Capital LLC, focusing on financial services and renewable energy investments.
