Mourad Boudjellal

French businessman

Soleil Productions emerged from the career of Mourad Boudjellal, who established the comic publishing company before pivoting toward high-profile sports management. Born in 1960 in Ollioules, France, he attended the Lycée Dumont d'Urville and eventually became a prominent figure in French media, sports administration, and business, securing national recognition for his contributions to the country's commercial and sporting landscape.

Rugby Management and Commercial Growth

Boudjellal served as the president of RC Toulonnais between 2006 and 2020. During his tenure, he transformed the club by recruiting notable international players such as Sonny Bill Williams, Tana Umaga, Steffon Armitage, Matt Giteau, Mathieu Bastareaud, Bakkies Botha, and Jonny Wilkinson. His management approach facilitated a 500% increase in the club's turnover, effectively removing the requirement for his personal financial subsidies.

Media Appearances and Public Controversy

Throughout his career, Boudjellal maintained a presence in media, working with RMC in 2013, Canal+ in 2015, and Eurosport 2 in 2018. His public comments frequently drew scrutiny; in January 2012, his remarks regarding match officiating resulted in a 130-day suspension imposed by the LNR. These outbursts earned him a reputation for impulsive communication in his capacity as a sports executive.

Expansion into Football and Political Activity

After departing from RC Toulonnais, Boudjellal attempted to acquire Olympique de Marseille and Sporting Club Toulon in 2020. Though those efforts were unsuccessful, he secured a takeover agreement for the French fourth division football team Hyères FC in February 2021. Beyond sports, he has engaged in political activism while maintaining his status as a businessperson.

Honours and Distinctions

The French government recognized his professional achievements through two major awards. In 2008, he was appointed as a Knight of the National Order of Merit. Ten years later, in 2018, he received further state recognition when he was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
