Mitchell Baker graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979 with a BA in Chinese studies before earning her JD from the same institution in 1987. Her career transitioned from corporate law to the heart of open-source software development, where she shaped the legal and organizational framework for the Mozilla project during its formative years.
Early Legal Career
Baker gained initial professional experience at Fenwick & West LLP from 1990 until 1993, a firm focused on high-technology legal services. She moved to Sun Microsystems in late 1993, serving as an associate general counsel for one year. In 1994, she joined Netscape Communications Corporation as one of the inaugural members of its legal department, where she managed intellectual property protection and internal technology groups.

During her time at Netscape, Baker drafted the Netscape Public License and the Mozilla Public License, providing the legal architecture for the Mozilla project. She became general manager of mozilla.org in 1999. Following her departure from the company in 2001, she continued to lead the project as a volunteer. In 2002, she joined the Open Source Applications Foundation, serving on its board of directors.
Leadership at Mozilla
Baker played a central role in founding the Mozilla Foundation in July 2003, acting as its president. When the Mozilla Corporation launched as a taxable subsidiary in 2005, she assumed the role of CEO while retaining her chairwoman position at the Foundation. She transitioned out of the CEO role in 2008 before returning to the position in April 2020. She oversaw significant workforce restructuring in 2020 and served as CEO until February 2024, eventually departing the organization entirely in February 2025.
Recognition and Professional Standing
Her work earned multiple distinctions, including an EFF Award in 2008 and the Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision Award in 2009. The Internet Society inducted her into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012. She was further recognized by the Catholic University of Louvain with an honorary doctorate in 2018 and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022.
