Early Life and Education
Born in Kolkata on 16 June 1950, Chakraborty attended the Oriental Seminary before enrolling at Scottish Church College, where he completed his second year of a B.Sc. in Chemistry. He subsequently pursued formal training in acting, graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. His formative years included a period of involvement with the Naxalite movement before he pivoted toward a career in the film industry.

Following his debut with Mrinal Sen, Chakraborty secured roles in various projects, including the 1978 Bengali film Nadi Theke Sagare and the 1979 thriller Surakksha. He reached international prominence with the 1982 film Disco Dancer. The production became the first Indian film to gross ₹1 billion, achieving notable success in both domestic and Soviet Union markets. Throughout the 1980s, he maintained a high output of commercial successes, including Pyar Jhukta Nahin and Ghulami, while continuing to receive critical recognition for diverse character roles.
Political and Public Service
Chakraborty served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2016. He engaged in political activities, including a transition to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021. Beyond politics, he contributed to the film industry through the Cine & T.V Artistes Association, which he co-founded in 1992 to assist actors, and served as Chairperson for the Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union to support cinema workers.
Awards and Recognition
The actor has received significant national recognition, including three National Film Awards for his performances in 1977, 1993, and 1996. He was honored with the Banga Bibhushan in 2013 and the Padma Bhushan in 2024. Additionally, his work in the television industry, specifically on the show Dance India Dance, earned recognition in both the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records.
