Political Ascent

Following the independence of Slovakia, Jureňa joined the Peasants' Party of Slovakia. This group operated as a junior partner to the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, merging with the larger party in 1998. When the party’s primary agriculture expert, Miroslav Maxon, resigned in 2005, Jureňa assumed that vacancy. Following the 2006 parliamentary election, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture.

Ministerial Dismissal

In November 2007, Prime Minister Robert Fico demanded Jureňa’s resignation due to corruption allegations. Jureňa held his final press conference inside a cowshed in Vajnory. He invoked religious comparisons, equating his situation to that of Jesus Christ and labelling Fico a Pharisee. He utilized the venue to levy counter-allegations against other government members before leaving office.

Legislative and Later Career

After his ministerial tenure, Jureňa served as a Deputy of the National Council of Slovakia until 2010. Following the HZDS's failure to maintain parliamentary representation in 2010, he joined the Slovak National Party. In 2024, he acted as the campaign head for Štefan Harabin during the presidential election. His involvement ended abruptly after he issued an unauthorized statement endorsing Peter Pellegrini, leading to his dismissal by Harabin.
