Early Development and Training
Raised in the Broughton area of Salford, Leigh attended Salford Grammar School. Leigh began as an actor, appearing in the 1963 episode of Maigret titled The Flemish Shop. By the mid-1960s, he shifted focus to theatre direction and playwriting. His early work included designing and directing the first production of Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs at the Unity Theatre in 1965. He later served as an assistant director for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

His feature film career launched with Bleak Moments in 1971. Leigh is recognized for his commitment to improvised performances, aiming to capture intuitive and vulnerable human interactions.
