Early Life and Military Service
Born in 1929 in Detroit to Macedonian immigrants Sotir and Sultana Ilitch, he attended Cooley High School. His father worked as a tool and die maker. Following high school, Ilitch served for four years in the United States Marine Corps.

In 1999, he and his wife Marian founded Ilitch Holdings, Inc. to centralize technical and professional services for their diverse enterprises. By 2007, the company reported annual revenues exceeding $1.8 billion. In 2000, he appointed his children Christopher and Denise as co-presidents of the holding company, with Christopher eventually assuming the role of CEO.
Detroit Sports Franchises
Ilitch acquired the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 for $8 million. Under his ownership, the team secured Stanley Cup victories in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008, while maintaining a 25-season playoff streak. In 1992, he purchased the Detroit Tigers from Tom Monaghan. He later financed 60% of the $350 million Comerica Park, which opened in 2000. His earlier sports ventures included the Detroit Wheels football team and the Detroit Caesars professional softball team.
Real Estate and Community Impact
Beyond sports and food, he focused on Detroit real estate redevelopment. This included the restoration of the Fox Theatre and the transition of his corporate headquarters to that specific site. He died in Detroit in 2017 and is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
