Mike Dirnt

Michael Ryan Pritchard, known professionally as Mike Dirnt, is an American musician and co-founder of the rock band Green Day. Born in Berkeley, California, in 1972, he emerged from the DIY punk scene at 924 Gilman Street to become a prominent bassist and songwriter, shaping the sound of a band that achieved global commercial success.

Early Formation

Born on May 4, 1972, in Oakland, California, Pritchard was adopted as a child. He moved frequently between El Sobrante and Rodeo, California, following his parents' divorce. During his time at Carquinez Middle School, he met Billie Joe Armstrong, with whom he shared an interest in punk bands like the Ramones and the Replacements. After attending the all-boys Catholic school Salesian High School, he transferred to Pinole Valley High School. To support his family, he worked as a chef at Nantucket, a seafood restaurant in Crockett, eventually saving enough to buy a pickup truck that allowed him and Armstrong to travel to Berkeley.

Musical Development and Green Day

Dirnt began playing music with Armstrong in 1986 under the name Sweet Children. After bassist Sean Hughes left, Dirnt moved to bass, and the band rebranded as Green Day in 1989. He recorded the debut album 39/Smooth during the 1989 Christmas holiday, graduating from Pinole Valley High School in 1990 before embarking on the band's first van tour. Beyond his primary work with Green Day, he has participated in several projects including Screeching Weasel, The Frustrators, Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Network, and The Coverups.

Performance and Technique

Dirnt, who originally played guitar, uses a pick to play bass with a style characterized by high-fret runs and quick pull-offs, often prioritizing a percussive right-hand technique. He recorded the album Dookie primarily on a 1985 Fender Precision Bass and later collaborated with Fender to develop a signature model inspired by the 1951 Precision Bass design. Throughout his career, he has faced various onstage incidents, including losing a tooth at Woodstock '94 and sustaining a skull fracture from a bottle thrown at the 1998 KROQ Weenie Roast.

Contributions and Recognition

While Billie Joe Armstrong serves as the primary lyricist, Dirnt has contributed lyrics to tracks such as 'Emenius Sleepus' and 'J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva).' He also composed the introduction for 'Desensitized' by manipulating a baseball bat and a cathode ray tube television. The band received induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 1, 2025.
