A bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign serves as the formal foundation for Mike Byster, a mathematician who transitioned from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange to the field of education. Born in 1959 in Chicago, he dedicated his career to refining and teaching rapid mental arithmetic techniques to children across the United States.
Formative Years and Education
Raised in Skokie, Illinois, with his older sister, Byster developed an early aptitude for mathematical shortcuts. His parents, Gloria and Dave, actively encouraged these numerical explorations during his youth. He completed his secondary education at Niles North High School before enrolling at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He graduated from the institution in 1981 with a degree focused on finance.

Byster initially applied his skills within the financial sector at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. His career path shifted significantly when a cousin, who worked as a high school teacher in the Chicago area, requested he demonstrate his base-10 arithmetic methods to a classroom. Following this engagement, Byster left his finance role to focus exclusively on developing and teaching his proprietary methods. Over the subsequent years, he conducted presentations for more than 10,000 classrooms without charge.
System Development and Media Presence
In December 2003, Byster launched the website Mike's Math, which remained active until 2007. By 2008, he introduced the Brainetics system, a comprehensive math and memory program. He asserts that this methodology encourages the utilization of both brain hemispheres to accelerate information processing and recall. Byster has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including 20/20, The Gayle King Show, and multiple segments on QVC and The Shopping Channel. In 2017, he participated in the FOX competition series Superhuman, where he earned a $50,000 prize and the show's titular designation.
Personal Life and Recent Activities
Byster married in the early 1990s and has a son named Josh, whom he instructed in his calculation techniques. He currently lives in the northern suburbs of Chicago. His public engagement has included a 2016 TEDx talk titled How to Think Like a Genius and regular appearances as a monthly guest on the radio program The Rude Awakening Show on WOCM.
