Early Development and Junior Success
The daughter of former ski racers Eileen and Jeff Shiffrin, she spent her formative years in Colorado and later attended middle school at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont. Her performance at the 2010 Topolino Games in Italy marked a turning point, as she claimed titles in both slalom and giant slalom. Shiffrin debuted on the World Cup circuit in March 2011 at Špindlerův Mlýn. Shortly thereafter, at age 16, she won the slalom title at the US National Championships in Winter Park, Colorado. Her first World Cup podium occurred in December 2011 in Lienz, Austria, followed by her maiden World Cup victory in December 2012 at a night slalom in Åre, Sweden. She concluded the 2013 season by securing the slalom discipline title at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide.
Olympic Dominance and Sustained Excellence
In 2014, at age 18, she became the youngest slalom gold medalist in Olympic history during the Sochi Games. Following consecutive successful seasons, she maintained her momentum with a 2015 World Championship victory in Beaver Creek. Despite a knee injury sustained in Åre in 2015 that interrupted her 2016 season, she returned to competition in Crans-Montana in February 2016 to secure her 18th career victory, continuing a trajectory that led to her eventual 100-win milestone.

Beyond her racing career, Shiffrin has pursued interests in athletics ownership and academia. In 2024, she announced her engagement to Norwegian alpine skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.
