Early Life and Artistic Development

He received no formal training, instead focusing his practice on the visual landscape of his immediate surroundings. His technique evolved to focus on the textures of urban life, distinguishing his work within the broader French artistic movement of the early twentieth century.

As his health declined in his later years, Utrillo shifted his working methods significantly. Unable to continue painting outdoors, he utilized postcards, memory, and views from windows to produce his landscapes. In 1935, he married Lucie Valore and moved to Le Vésinet. He remained active in his production until his death in 1955 at the age of 72 in Dax.
Provenance and Restitution
Several of Utrillo’s works became subjects of historical investigation regarding their movement during the twentieth century. Notable paintings such as Carrefour à Sannois and Église de Pont-Saint-Martin were identified in collections after having been seized in 1940. Restitution efforts in 2022 successfully returned these pieces to the heirs of their original owners, clarifying the ownership history of these specific canvases.
