The first player in National Hockey League history to record 50 goals in a single season, Maurice Richard reached this milestone during the 1944–45 campaign. Over an 18-season career spent entirely with the Montreal Canadiens, he established himself as a central figure in Canadian athletics, eventually becoming the first player to surpass 500 career goals.
Early Development and Minor Leagues
Born in Montreal in 1921, Richard grew up in a household navigating the economic hardships of the Great Depression. He began skating at age four and developed his puck-handling skills through informal games before entering organized hockey at 14. After training as a machinist, he joined the Verdun Juniors at age 18. His transition to the professional level faced delays due to recurring injuries, including a broken ankle sustained during his 1940 debut with the Montreal Canadiens' affiliate in the Quebec Senior Hockey League.

Richard made his NHL debut in 1942, signing a contract with the Montreal Canadiens. Despite early career fractures that left him with a permanently deformed ankle, he successfully adapted his skating style. He became a primary offensive force, winning the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1947. By his retirement in 1960, he held the league record for total career goals with 544. His contributions to the team included eight Stanley Cup championships, including five consecutive titles from 1956 to 1960.
Impact and Legacy
Beyond his statistical achievements, Richard became a symbol for francophone Quebec. His suspension by league president Clarence Campbell during the 1954–55 season sparked the Richard Riot, an event frequently cited as a cultural touchstone in Quebec history. His career was documented in the literature of the era, notably in the short story The Hockey Sweater. Following his death in 2000, he received a state funeral, the first for a non-politician in the province.
