Early Education and Pedagogical Roots
Born in Hiitola in 1935 as the eighth of ten children, Talvela initially pursued a career in education. He completed primary school teacher training in Savonlinna between 1952 and 1956. Following his graduation, he served as a teacher at three separate schools from 1957 until 1960. His academic background occurred alongside studies in Lahti and Stockholm before his transition to professional singing.

Talvela joined the Stockholm Royal Opera from 1961 to 1962. Shortly thereafter, he became a permanent ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in 1962, the same year he debuted at Bayreuth. In 1970, the West Berlin government officially recognized his contributions by granting him the rank of Kammersänger. His performances spanned diverse roles, including Pimen, the Commendatore, Sarastro, Dosefei, and Prince Gremin. He achieved particular distinction for his portrayal of the title character in Boris Godunov, which he performed 39 times between 1974 and 1987.
Artistic Leadership and Agrarian Life
Beyond his stage work, Talvela influenced the administration of Finnish musical institutions. He served as the inaugural artistic leader of the Savonlinna Opera Festival from 1972 until 1979. Toward the end of his life, he was appointed general director of the National Opera in Helsinki. Simultaneously, he managed the Inkilänhovi farm in Juva from 1981 to 1989. His health, which had been affected by diabetes, gout, and heart conditions throughout the 1980s, ended with a fatal heart attack while attending his daughter's wedding in 1989.
