Miettunen secured a seat in the Parliament of Finland in 1945, representing the Agrarian Party. He held this legislative position until 1958. During this period, he also served a term as Minister of Finance in 1957. Upon leaving the parliament, he transitioned to the regional administration, serving as the Governor of the Province of Lapland between 1958 and 1973.
Prime Minister and Presidential Cooperation
The political trajectory of Miettunen included three separate terms as Prime Minister. He led his first cabinet from 1961 to 1962. Later, he returned to the premiership to lead the second and third Miettunen cabinets, serving consecutively from 1975 to 1977. Throughout his tenure, he worked closely with President Urho Kekkonen, frequently acting as his primary political associate. In 1977, he received the honorary title of Counsellor of State.
Personal Life and Final Years
A adherent of Lutheranism, Miettunen spent his final years in the Helsinki region. He passed away on 19 January 2002 at a military hospital located in Kauniainen. Following his death at the age of 94, his remains were interred at Simoniemi.
