Born in 1968 in Pozo Hondo, Puerto Rico, Manuel Rivera-Ortiz transitioned from a childhood in a corrugated tin shack to a career as a global social documentary photographer. His work focuses on the living conditions of marginalized populations in less developed nations, capturing humanitarian issues that are frequently omitted from mainstream media reports and institutional narratives.
Early Life and Education
Rivera-Ortiz was the eldest of ten children, growing up in an environment without running water. Following the separation of his parents when he was 11, he moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts, with his father. During his youth, he participated in the Massachusetts Migrant Education summer program, where he received his introduction to photography and film development. He eventually settled in Rochester, New York, where he attended East High School. His academic career continued at Nazareth College, where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995. In 1998, he earned a Master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Nazareth University later awarded him an honorary doctorate and invited him to be their 2024 commencement speaker.

After completing his studies, Rivera-Ortiz initially worked as a journalist for publications including the Democrat and Chronicle and Elle. By 2001, he shifted his focus toward documentary photography and freelance photojournalism. His practice is characterized by a social realist approach, prioritizing the documentation of human dignity amidst hardship. He has traveled extensively to photograph communities in Cuba, India, Kenya, Turkey, and Thailand, as well as the Aymara people in Bolivia and populations in Mumbai slums like Dharavi and Baiganwadi.
Foundation and Institutional Recognition
In 2010, Rivera-Ortiz established the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for Documentary Photography & Film in Rochester, New York. The non-profit organization provides grants, awards, and exhibition opportunities for filmmakers and photographers from less developed countries and maintains an exhibition space in Arles, France. His own photography has been held in various collections, including the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Berne. He has received recognition such as En Foco's New Works Photography Award in 2004 and the Artist of the Year Award from the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester in 2007.
