Manuel Luis Pellegrini Ripamonti, born in Santiago on 16 September 1953, has established a cross-continental career as both an association football defender and a manager. Having graduated as a civil engineer in 1979 from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, he successfully navigated the complexities of international football management across Europe, South America, and China throughout his professional tenure.
Formative Years and Playing Career
Pellegrini spent his entire professional playing career as a defender at Club Universidad de Chile, where he made 451 appearances and scored seven goals between 1973 and 1986. During his tenure, the club secured the 1979 Copa Chile, ending a long drought. His international experience included a single appearance for the Chile national team in a 1986 friendly against Brazil. He retired in February 1987, citing a match against Trasandino where he felt overshadowed by a young Iván Zamorano.
