He subsequently served as the rector of Khorugh State University from 1992 to 1995. His political career included a tenure as a member of the Assembly of Representatives of Tajikistan, where he chaired the Committee on Social Policy from 1995 to 2003. Additionally, he held the position of Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan between 2003 and 2005.

In 2005, Ilolov assumed the presidency of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan, a position he has held alongside his research activities. His work in the scientific community has been marked by numerous memberships, including the American Mathematical Society, joined in 1980. He became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan in 1997 and attained full academician status in 2005.
