The 1968 Summer Olympics marked a high point for Ethiopian athletics, as Mamo Wolde claimed the marathon gold medal. A versatile competitor throughout his career, he excelled in track, cross-country, and road racing. His athletic achievements spanned nearly two decades, establishing him as one of the most prominent long-distance runners in international sporting history during the twentieth century.
Early Development and Military Service
Born on 12 June 1932 in Ada'a, Oromia Region, Degaga Wolde entered the Imperial Guard in 1951 after moving to Addis Ababa. His professional path included a military deployment as a peacekeeper in Korea from 1953 to 1955. His younger brother, Demissie Wolde, also pursued a career as an international distance runner.

Wolde initially competed in middle-distance events, including the 800 m and 1,500 m at the 1956 Summer Olympics. By the 1960s, his focus shifted to longer races. He secured significant cross-country victories at the International Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar and the Cross de San Donostin in San Sebastian during 1963 and 1964. He returned to both events in 1967, adding another victory at Elgoibar in 1968. In 1964, he placed fourth in the 10,000 m at the Summer Olympics.
Olympic Successes and Setbacks
At the 1968 Summer Olympics, Wolde secured a silver medal in the 10,000 m before winning the marathon gold. In 1972, at age 40, he achieved a bronze medal in the marathon with a time of 2:15:08, attributing his performance to unsuitable shoes provided by officials. He also claimed victory in the marathon at the 1973 All-Africa Games.
Legal Proceedings and Final Years
In 1993, Wolde faced arrest for alleged involvement in a Red Terror execution during the Mengistu Haile Mariam regime. He maintained he did not directly participate in the killing. After nine years in detention, he was convicted in early 2002 and sentenced to six years, resulting in his immediate release due to time already served. He died of liver cancer on 26 May 2002 in Addis Ababa and is interred at Saint Joseph’s Church Cemetery.
