A professional debut during a 1–1 draw against TSG Hoffenheim on 7 March 2020 marked the entry of Malick Thiaw into elite association football. Since that beginning with Schalke 04, the Düsseldorf-born defender has navigated a career path through Serie A and the Premier League, eventually earning selection for the German national squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early Development and Schalke 04
Before reaching professional ranks, Thiaw played youth football for TV Kalkum-Wittlaer, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He joined the Schalke 04 academy in 2015. Following his first-team debut in 2020, he contributed to the club's success in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2021–22 season.

Thiaw signed with AC Milan on 29 August 2022. After an initial period on the sidelines, he secured a regular starting role in February 2023 following a performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League. He remained a central figure in the defense, winning the Supercoppa Italiana in the 2024–25 season. He registered his first goal for the club against Real Madrid on 5 November 2024.
Move to Newcastle United
On 12 August 2025, Thiaw transferred to Newcastle United for a fee of £30 million plus add-ons. He reunited with Sandro Tonali in the Premier League, choosing the number 12 jersey. His impact included a two-goal performance against Everton on 29 November 2025. By the start of the 2026/27 campaign, he served as club captain during the absence of Dan Burn.
International Representation
Born to a Senegalese father and a Finnish mother, Thiaw holds citizenship in both Germany and Finland. Although he was called up to the Finland U17s in 2017, he did not appear for them. He represented the German U21 team before making his senior international debut on 16 June 2023 against Poland. He was subsequently included in the 26-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
