Nursing training in Sétif provided the technical foundation for Malika Gaïd, who transitioned from hospital work to the front lines of the Algerian War. Between 1948 and 1951, she earned her diploma, eventually applying these clinical skills to treat injured members of the National Liberation Army while serving as an active independence fighter.
Early Career and Clinical Background
Born on 24 August 1933 in the Belcourt district, Gaïd was raised in a literate, middle-class household. Her father, Mohand Amokrane, worked as a schoolteacher. Following her nursing certification in 1951, she held positions in regional hospitals at Kherrata, Guenzet, and Bougaâ. During her tenure at these facilities, which lasted until 1956, she performed clandestine medical duties for the Mujahideen.

In June 1955, Colonel Amirouche requested her presence within the National Liberation Army forces operating in the Soummam Valley. By August 1956, Gaïd held the distinction of being the sole woman present at the Soummam Conference, where the FLN established its strategy for independence. She functioned in a dual capacity, providing essential nursing care and operating as an armed combatant.
Death and Legacy
On 27 June 1957, while stationed in a mountain cave west of Bouïra, Gaïd was killed by a French soldier during a major military operation. Colonel Amirouche formally notified her family of her death, acknowledging her dual contribution as a medical provider and a militant. In 2019, the Algerian state issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring her image.
