Lotte Lenya

Lotte Lenya reached a significant career milestone in 1956 when she received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Threepenny Opera. This achievement remains the only instance of an off-Broadway performance earning such an honor, marking a defining moment in her long career across theatre, film, and television.

Early Development and Breakthrough

Born Karoline Wilhelmine Charlotte Blamauer in 1898 in Vienna, Lenya studied in Zürich starting in 1914. She began her career at the Schauspielhaus under the name Lotte Lenja. After moving to Berlin in 1921, she auditioned for Kurt Weill in 1922 for his work Zaubernacht but did not secure the role. Her eventual breakthrough occurred in 1928, when she played Jenny in the original performance of The Threepenny Opera.

Relocation and American Career

Lenya departed for Paris in March 1933, later settling in New York City on 10 September 1935 with Kurt Weill. Throughout the mid-1930s, she participated in projects including the Broadway play Johnny Johnson. Following Weill's death in 1950, she returned to the stage, performing in Barefoot in Athens. She later founded the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music to manage the rights and legacy of her late husband's compositions.

Cinematic Roles and Critical Recognition

In 1961, Lenya earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her performance as the Contessa in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. She achieved further global recognition in 1963 by portraying the antagonist Rosa Klebb in the James Bond film From Russia with Love.

Personal History

Lenya married Kurt Weill in 1926, divorced in 1933, and remarried him in 1937, remaining with him until his death in 1950. She later married editor George Davis in 1951, followed by a marriage to artist Russell Detwiler in 1962, and finally Richard Siemanowski in 1971. She died of cancer in Manhattan in 1981 at the age of 83 and is interred at Mount Repose Cemetery.
