Lou Ferrigno

Louis Jude Ferrigno started his career in the industrial suburbs of Brooklyn, where he constructed crude exercise equipment from cement and broomsticks. This unconventional training eventually led to national bodybuilding titles and a transition into entertainment, where his physicality secured him roles that defined his presence in American popular culture throughout the late twentieth century.

Bodybuilding Foundations

Born in 1951, Ferrigno attended Brooklyn Technical High School and learned metal working. By 1969, he secured the IFBB Mr. America title. He moved to Columbus, Ohio, to train alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, later competing in the 1974 Mr. Olympia contest where he placed second. His physical development was the focal point of the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron. Before achieving fame in athletics, he worked for three years as a sheet metal worker in a factory, a job he left after witnessing a workplace injury.

The Incredible Hulk and Film Roles

Ferrigno gained broad recognition for portraying the title character in the CBS television series The Incredible Hulk from 1977 to 1982. During this period, he formed a professional relationship with actor Bill Bixby. Following his tenure on the series, he appeared in European-produced fantasy projects such as the 1983 film Hercules and the 1989 feature Sinbad of the Seven Seas. In 1984, he received a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star.

Voice Acting and Television Appearances

Beyond physical performance, Ferrigno contributed his voice to various animated and digital incarnations of the Hulk. He maintained a recurring role as himself on the CBS sitcom The King of Queens between 2000 and 2007. His work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe included cameo appearances as a security guard in the 2003 and 2008 versions of the Hulk, for which he also provided the character's vocal effects until 2015.

Sheriff Service and Fitness Ventures

Ferrigno expanded his activities into law enforcement and commercial fitness. In 2006, he was sworn in as a reserve sheriff's deputy for Los Angeles County. Four years later, he joined a volunteer sheriff posse in Maricopa County, Arizona. Commercially, he launched a fitness equipment line under the name Ferrigno Fitness and provided training instruction for individuals including Michael Jackson.
