Early Career and Education
Born in Manila in 1971, Salonga attended the Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center before pursuing studies at Ateneo de Manila University, the University of the Philippines, and Fordham University. By the 1980s, she had established herself as a child star in the Philippines, recording the gold-certified album Small Voice in 1981 and hosting the television show Love, Lea. Her teenage years included film appearances in works such as Captain Barbell and Ninja Kids, alongside regular television work on the variety program That's Entertainment.

In 1989, Salonga achieved global prominence after auditioning in Manila for the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. She debuted in the West End production at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, later moving to the Broadway Theatre in 1991. Her portrayal earned her the 1990 Laurence Olivier Award and the 1991 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, making her the first actress of Asian descent to win the latter. She subsequently performed in notable productions including Les Misérables and Flower Drum Song.
Film, Voice Acting, and Recordings
Salonga expanded her career into film and voice work, providing the singing voices for Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in the Mulan films. Her recording career has remained prolific, spanning albums such as the platinum-selling Lea Salonga and holiday collections like The Christmas Album and Sounding Joy. Her concert performances have reached venues including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House.
Honours and Professional Recognition
The Philippine government has recognized her cultural contributions through the Presidential Merit Award, the Congressional Medal of Achievement, and an appointment as Commander of the Order of Lakandula. In 2011, she was named a Disney Legend. Her industry accolades include 15 Aliw Awards, the Theatre World Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She remains a member of the Actors' Equity Association.
