Academic Formation
Thiêm pursued higher education at the Université Indochinoise before securing a scholarship to attend the École Normale Supérieure. His studies were delayed by the Second World War, yet he managed to complete a bachelor's degree in mathematics in one year. He subsequently moved to Germany, where he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Göttingen in 1945. Following this, he spent time at ETH Zurich from 1946 to 1949, where he collaborated with Rolf Herman Nevanlinna.

Returning to Vietnam in 1949 at the request of Ho Chi Minh, Thiêm focused on building the nation's scientific infrastructure. By 1951, he held leadership roles at the Hanoi National University of Education and the Hanoi University of Science. In 1970, he assumed the position of director at the newly established Vietnam Institute of Mathematics. He was instrumental in launching professional publications including Acta Mathematica Vietnamica and the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, serving as the first editor-in-chief for both.
Legacy and Recognition
Throughout his career, Thiêm fostered mathematical talent, including the promotion of specialized high school programs during the 1960s. His contributions to the field were recognized posthumously with the Hồ Chí Minh Prize in 1996. Beyond institutional honors, his name is attached to a scholarship for young mathematicians and a street in Hanoi. He passed away in Ho Chi Minh City in 1991 at the age of 73.
