Kumar Sangakkara

The career of Kumar Sangakkara, spanning from 2000 to 2015, established him as a premier wicket-keeper-batter for Sri Lanka. Born in 1977 in Matale, his professional trajectory included domestic tenures with the Nondescripts Cricket Club and Surrey, while his international contributions were central to Sri Lanka winning the 2001-02 Asian Test Championship, 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, and 2014 T20 World Cup.

Professional Development

Sangakkara began his first-class career with the Nondescripts Cricket Club during the 1997-98 season. Before committing fully to the sport, he enrolled at the University of Colombo to study law. However, his selection for the Sri Lanka A team tour of South Africa in November 1999 prompted him to indefinitely postpone his academic pursuits. He remained with the Nondescripts club until the 2013-14 season, later representing Surrey County Cricket Club from 2015 until 2017.

International Statistical Milestones

Across all international formats, Sangakkara accumulated 28,016 runs, including 63 centuries. As a wicket-keeper-batter, he holds the highest records for Test centuries at 38 and ODI centuries at 25. He is among a select group of 15 players to score more than 10,000 Test runs and maintains the highest average among that cohort. His batting style was left-handed, though he occasionally served as a right-arm off-spinner.

Awards and Administrative Roles

The International Cricket Council recognized his performance with the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in 2012, alongside the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. He also claimed the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year title in 2011 and 2013. In June 2021, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. Post-retirement, he served as President of the MCC from October 2019 to September 2021 and coached the Rajasthan Royals from 2021 to 2024.
