Born in 1857 in Kokura, he established himself as an engineer and entrepreneur whose career bridged the gap between early government service and the formation of a global telecommunications corporation.
Early Career and International Experience
After graduating from the Imperial College of Engineering, Iwadare worked for the Japanese Ministry of Industry as a telegraph engineer. In 1886, he traveled abroad to New York, where he secured a position at an Edison facility on Goerck Street. By January 1887, he moved to the Edison Machine Works in Schenectady. These years provided technical training in electrical systems that influenced his subsequent work in Japan.

Upon returning to Japan, Iwadare joined the Osaka Electric Lamp Company, known as Osaka Dento, as an electrical engineer. After eight years, he left to operate as a general sales agent for Western Electric and General Electric. In 1895, Walter Tenney Carleton approached him on behalf of Western Electric to discuss a telephone equipment partnership. This negotiation resulted in a limited partnership established in August 1898. Following treaty changes in 1899, this entity became Nippon Electric Co. Ltd., with Western Electric holding 54 percent of the stock. Iwadare served as the managing director.
Professional Legacy
Iwadare guided the company through its early development and was appointed chairman of the board in 1926. The firm, now recognized as NEC Corporation, represented a significant shift in the Japanese industrial landscape toward joint-stock capital and modern corporate structures. He died in 1941 and is buried at Sōji-ji Temple.
