Taking control of the Aditya Birla Group at age 28 following his father's death, Kumar Mangalam Birla transformed a multi-generational family enterprise into a global conglomerate. Under his stewardship, the group's annual turnover surged from US$2 billion in 1995 to US$70 billion by 2026, expanding operations across 40 countries through strategic acquisitions and sector diversification.
Early Education and Professional Foundation
Born in Kolkata in 1967 and raised in Mumbai, Birla belongs to the fourth generation of the Birla family. He completed his secondary education at the Campion School in Mumbai before attending Sydenham College. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Mumbai and later qualified as a chartered accountant through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. His international academic trajectory included studies at the London School of Economics and the London Business School, where he obtained an MBA in 1992.
Consolidation and Industrial Expansion
Upon assuming the chairmanship in 1995, Birla consolidated various entities under the singular Aditya Birla Group brand. His strategy involved heavy industrial expansion, starting with the acquisition of Indian Aluminum Company in 2000. He moved into cement by acquiring a majority stake in L&T Cement, later rebranded as UltraTech Cement. The group further diversified by purchasing the Atlanta-based producer Novelis Inc. in 2007 and entering the retail sector through the acquisition of Pantaloon Retail Limited in 2012.
