Ki Sung-yueng launched his professional career in 2006, transitioning from a youth education in Australia to becoming a central figure in South Korean football.
Early Development and Youth Career
Born in Gwangju on 24 January 1989, Ki pursued early athletic training abroad. In 2001, he moved to Brisbane, Australia, to attend John Paul College, participating in a specialist brain soccer program. He helped his school team secure the 2004 Bill Turner Cup. Returning to South Korea in 2005, he completed his secondary education at Kumho High School before joining FC Seoul in 2006.

Ki made his senior debut for FC Seoul on 4 March 2007 against Daegu FC. By 2008, he had secured a starting role, contributing to the club's K League runners-up finish. In December 2009, he completed a £2.1 million transfer to Celtic. His tenure in Scotland included winning both the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Cup, highlighted by a notable strike in the 2011 Scottish Cup Final.
International Service
Ki earned 110 caps for the South Korea national team between 2008 and 2019. His international career included appearances in three FIFA World Cup tournaments, where he served as captain during the 2018 edition in Russia. Additionally, he participated in three Asian Cups, achieving a runner-up finish in 2015, and secured a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Premier League Tenure
Following his time in Scotland, Ki joined Swansea City, where he was named the club's Player of the Year for the 2014-2015 season after scoring eight goals in 33 appearances. During his time in the English top flight, he also spent a season on loan at Sunderland. He contributed to Swansea's 2013 EFL Cup victory.
