Born in Battambang in 1902, Khuang Aphaiwong emerged as a central figure in Thai governance during the mid-twentieth century. Trained as an engineer at the University of Lyon, he transitioned into a political career that saw him lead the nation through three distinct premierships between 1944 and 1948, eventually founding the conservative Democrat Party.
Early Career and Regime Change
Khuang was the son of the governor Chao Phraya Abhayabhubet and attended the Debsirin School in Bangkok. After completing his technical studies in France, he returned to Thailand to work in the telegraph department, where his leadership as director led to the title Luang Kowit-aphaiwong. He became active in the civil faction of the Khana Ratsadon, contributing to the 1932 transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy. During the subsequent years, he held various ministerial roles, including serving as the minister of commerce and communications, while also maintaining a commission as a major in the King's Guard.

In August 1944, the National Assembly elected Khuang as prime minister following the resignation of Plaek Phibunsongkhram. His appointment acted as a bridge between military interests and the Free Thai Movement. During his tenure, he prioritized superficial diplomatic stability with Japan while quietly shielding resistance members. Following the end of the conflict in 1945, he stepped down to facilitate the transition to a new administration, having successfully navigated the immediate domestic tensions between government factions and the military leadership.
The Democrat Party and Subsequent Terms
Khuang co-founded the Democrat Party in 1946 and secured a brief term as prime minister from January to March of that year. His third premiership began in November 1947 after a coup led by Field Marshal Phin Chunhawan. His government attempted to implement a new constitution designed to limit military influence, a move that prompted his forced resignation in April 1948. He remained active in the political arena as the leader of the opposition until the national prohibition of political parties in 1958.
