Born in 1948 in the Ballıca village of Nazımiye, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu transitioned from a career in the Turkish civil service to becoming a central figure in national politics. As an economist and former bureaucrat, he served as the leader of the Republican People’s Party between 2010 and 2023, while holding the position of the Main Opposition leader during that period.
Bureaucratic Origins
Kılıçdaroğlu earned an economics degree from Gazi University in 1971. He joined the Ministry of Finance as a junior account specialist before moving to France for further professional training. His early career included serving as the deputy director general of the Revenues Department in 1983. By 1991, he became the director-general of the Social Security Organization for Artisans and Self-Employed, followed by an appointment as director-general of the Social Insurance Institution in 1992. In 1994, he received the title of Civil Servant of the Year from Ekonomik Trend.

Take the IQ test →Parliamentary Ascent
After retiring from the civil service in 1999, Kılıçdaroğlu attempted to join the Democratic Left Party but shifted to the Republican People's Party after an invitation from Deniz Baykal. He secured a seat in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 2002 and held this position until 2023. His parliamentary tenure included acting as a group leader and gaining prominence through public debates regarding corruption allegations against members of the Justice and Development Party. He served as the CHP candidate for the mayoralty of İstanbul in 2009, capturing 37 percent of the vote.
Party Leadership and Presidential Campaigns
Following the resignation of Deniz Baykal in 2010, Kılıçdaroğlu was unanimously elected leader of the CHP. During his leadership, he served as deputy chairman of the Socialist International starting in August 2012. He facilitated the formation of the Nation Alliance, which contributed to party successes in the 2019 local elections. In the 2023 presidential election, he stood as the joint candidate for the CHP and the Nation Alliance, ultimately losing to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He was replaced by Özgür Özel in November 2023.
Judicial Reinstatement
A court ruling from the Ankara Regional Court of Justice on 21 May 2026 declared the previous CHP leadership election invalid, resulting in Kılıçdaroğlu being reappointed as chairman. This decision prompted the resignation of Özgür Özel and 91 members of parliament in July 2026, who subsequently formed the Yeni Parti. As a result of these departures, the Republican People’s Party retained 44 seats in the legislature.
