Majaliwa entered electoral politics in 2010, winning a seat in the National Assembly of Tanzania representing Ruangwa. His legislative work initially focused on regional administration and local government, serving as a Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office between 2010 and 2015. In the 2015 general election, he secured reelection to the National Assembly by defeating Omari Makota with 55 percent of the vote.
Tenure as Prime Minister
On 19 November 2015, President John Magufuli appointed Majaliwa as Prime Minister. His selection followed the 2015 general election, with his appointment noted for addressing regional representation requirements, specifically favoring the southern part of the country. Throughout his decade-long tenure, which lasted until 2025, he navigated the complex demands of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party. In July 2025, he announced his intention to forgo reelection to parliament in the upcoming October general election.
