Early Career and Karting
Kobayashi began his competitive path in 1996, finishing third in the SL Takarazuka Tournament Cadet Class at age nine. Over the subsequent seven years, he secured four karting titles, including two victories in the Toyota SL All Japan Tournament Cadet Class. In 2004, he joined the Toyota Driver Academy, transitioning into Formula Renault. His tenure in the class proved successful; after winning two races in the Italian championship, he dominated the following season by capturing both the Italian and European titles with six wins in each series.

After participating in the Formula 3 Euro Series and GP2, Kobayashi joined the Toyota Formula One team as a test and reserve driver in 2008. He made his race debut at the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix, qualifying eleventh and finishing ninth. He later scored his first world championship points at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Following Toyota's departure from the sport, he transitioned to Sauber for the 2010 season, remaining with the team through 2012.
Endurance Racing and Leadership
Kobayashi established a strong presence in the FIA World Endurance Championship, securing two world titles alongside co-drivers Mike Conway and José María López during the 2019-20 season and 2021. His endurance record includes winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021 and 2026, as well as the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019 and 2020. Since 2022, he has acted as team principal for Toyota in the WEC, overseeing three consecutive World Manufacturers' Championship titles from 2022 to 2024.
