Early Development and Professional Start

Born in 1962 in the Loreto Municipality of Mexico, Chávez entered the sport with limited resources. He transitioned to a professional career after amateur boxing experience at age 16. His professional debut occurred in Culiacán, Sinaloa, where his 12th fight on March 4, 1980, against Miguel Ruiz resulted in a victory following a review by the Mexican Boxing Commission regarding the timing of a knockout blow.

Championship Success and Unbeaten Streaks

Between 1984 and 1996, Chávez held multiple world titles, including the WBC Super Featherweight (1984-1987), WBC Lightweight (1988-1989), WBC Super Lightweight (1989-1994, 1994-1996), and IBF Junior Welterweight (1990-1991). He maintained a significant unbeaten streak throughout his title defenses, eventually winning 31 title fights. In 1993, his bout against Greg Haugen at Estadio Azteca drew an attendance of 132,274, setting a record for a championship boxing match.

Recognition and Legacy

The boxing community acknowledged his performance through several awards, including the Sugar Ray Robinson Award in 1987 and The Ring magazine Fighter of the Year in 1990. Chávez reached the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.
