Early life and education
In the history of anthropology, Julio Caro occupies the ground between patient observation and the larger claims it makes possible.
Julio Caro was born at Madrid in 1914. His recorded nationality is Spain. He was educated at Complutense University of Madrid and Instituto-Escuela.
Academic career
Around the turn of the twentieth century the sciences fractured into specialisms and simultaneously became national assets, funded and directed on a scale no earlier generation had seen.
Twenty questions, eight minutes on the clock, and a percentile measured against everyone who has taken it. No sign-up.
Take the IQ test →His working life was spent at Complutense University of Madrid, where the work centred on historia moderna, anthropology and ethnography.
Research focus
His name is attached above all to special interest in Basque culture, Basque history and Basque society. Anthropology insists that human societies can be studied without being ranked - a discipline that took a century to learn.
Geopolitical context
That the work was done from Spain matters to the story. Science has never been evenly distributed, and where a person is based has always shaped which problems are reachable and whose results get read.
Awards and recognition
His work was formally recognised with the honorary doctorate of the Bordeaux Montaigne University, Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise and Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts.
Legacy and death
What that record amounts to is a body of anthropology that later workers could build on without re-checking. That is the practical test of a scientific life, and it is a harder one than fame.
Julio Caro died in 1995, aged 81. What survives is not the reputation but the result: the part of anthropology that no longer has to be argued for.
