His professional ascent began with a 1976 exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, followed by a sold-out solo show at the Mary Boone Gallery in 1979. By 1981, he was identified with the neo-expressionist movement, exhibiting alongside artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. His work is noted for its physical scale, often incorporating diverse materials including antlers, velvet, wax, and surfboards, which impart sculptural qualities to his two-dimensional pieces.
Cinematic Achievements
Schnabel transitioned into film in the 1990s with his directorial debut, Basquiat. He achieved significant commercial and critical success with Before Night Falls and the 2007 film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. For the latter, he received the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe, alongside Academy Award and César Award nominations. His filmography also includes Miral and the 2018 biographical film At Eternity's Gate.

Throughout his career, Schnabel has maintained studios in New York City and San Sebastián.
