Ascending to the throne in September 1948 following the abdication of her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, Juliana of the Netherlands navigated a period of profound national transformation. Born in 1909 at The Hague, she served as monarch during the era of decolonization and the dissolution of the Netherlands-Indonesia Union, shaping the royal role through over three decades of change.
Early Development and Education
As the only child of Queen Wilhelmina and Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Juliana was educated within the private spheres of royal palaces. She attended classes at Noordeinde Palace with peers before completing secondary education under private tutors. In 1927, she enrolled at Leiden University, where she studied international law and various historical and social sciences, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in 1930.

In 1937, Juliana married Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, with whom she had four daughters: Beatrix, Irene, Margriet, and Christina. The outbreak of the Second World War forced a family separation; while the princess and her children moved to Canada for safety, her husband and mother remained in Britain to support the government-in-exile. The family reunited in the Netherlands following the 1945 liberation.
Reign and Abdication
Juliana took on royal duties in 1947 due to her mother's declining health before officially ascending to the throne in 1948. Her tenure was defined by the transition of the Dutch East Indies and Suriname toward independence. In April 1980, she abdicated in favor of her eldest daughter, Beatrix. Upon her death in 2004 at Soestdijk Palace, she was the longest-lived former reigning monarch in the world.
