Following the success of A Room with a View and his appearance in Ken Russell's 1986 film Gothic, Sands departed from a lead role in Maurice to relocate to Hollywood. This transition marked his shift toward American cinema, where he secured leading roles in projects such as Warlock and its sequel, Arachnophobia, and Leaving Las Vegas throughout the 1990s.
Television and Stage Versatility
Sands maintained a diverse portfolio across television, including playing Vladimir Bierko in 24, Jor-El in Smallville, and voicing the character of Valmont in Jackie Chan Adventures. On stage, he received critical recognition for his performance in A Celebration of Harold Pinter, which was directed by John Malkovich and earned a nomination for an Outstanding Solo Performance at the 2013 Drama Desk Awards.
Mountaineering and Final Days
Beyond his professional life, Sands was a committed mountaineer. On 13 January 2023, he disappeared while hiking at Mount San Antonio in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. Despite extensive search efforts by hundreds of volunteers over several months, his remains were eventually discovered by hikers on 24 June 2023. The official cause of death was determined to be undetermined.
