Julian Leow Beng Kim

Malaysian archbishop

The Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur designated Julian Leow Beng Kim as its fourth archbishop in 2014, marking a pivotal transition in the regional hierarchy. Born in Seremban, Malaysia, on 3 January 1964, Leow pursued an academic trajectory that moved from secular construction studies in Australia to ecclesiastical leadership within the Roman Catholic institutional structure.

Academic and Professional Background

Leow began his professional development outside of theology, graduating from the University of New South Wales in 1989 with a Bachelor of Building. This career path shifted in 1994 when he enrolled at College General in Penang. Following seven years of ecclesiastical study, he received ordination as a priest on 20 April 2002 by Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez. He later expanded his academic credentials by obtaining a Licentiate in Church History from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Ecclesiastical Tenure

Before his elevation to the episcopacy, Leow held administrative and educational responsibilities at College General, serving as both Dean of Studies and Formator from 2009. Pope Francis appointed him to the role of archbishop on 3 July 2014, succeeding the retired Murphy Pakiam. His official consecration occurred on 6 October 2014 at the Church of the Holy Family in Kajang, Selangor, in a ceremony attended by approximately 12,000 people. He operates under the episcopal motto, Integrity and Tenderness.

Governance and Public Scrutiny

Beyond his duties in Kuala Lumpur, Leow serves as president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. His tenure has not been without incident; his ordination to the episcopacy triggered public criticism regarding his choice of a tree motif in his coat of arms. Reports from the news portal Rorate Caeli indicated that some members of the faithful viewed the inclusion of a multi-religious symbol as suggestive of indifferentism.
