Early Influences and Music Debut
The son of John Lennon and Cynthia Powell, he spent his youth surrounded by the Beatles' cultural orbit. His father encouraged his musical interests after gifting him a Gibson Les Paul and a drum machine in 1973. His formal musical introduction occurred at age 11, when he performed drums on his father's track "Ya-Ya" for the album Walls and Bridges. His education took place at Kingsmead School in Hoylake and later at Ruthin School in Wales.

His solo career launched in 1984 with the album Valotte, produced by Phil Ramone. The record achieved significant commercial success, spawning top-ten hits including the title track and "Too Late for Goodbyes," which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Subsequent releases included 1986's The Secret Value of Daydreaming and 1991's Help Yourself, the latter featuring the successful single "Saltwater." By 1998, he released Photograph Smile on his own label, followed by the 2011 album Everything Changes.
Philanthropy and Documentary Work
Following an encounter with Mirning elders in Australia, he pivoted toward humanitarian and environmental causes. He established The White Feather Foundation in 2007. His film production work includes the 2006 documentary Whaledreamers, which secured eight international awards. In 2020, he served as an executive producer for the Netflix documentary Kiss the Ground, followed by its sequel Common Ground. In 2022, he executive produced Women of the White Buffalo, documenting life on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
